Geraldine “Geri“ Begg, 83, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013. She will be cremated and a Celebration of Life will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2013 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (517 SW Des Moines St., Ankeny, IA).
She was born July 7, 1929 to Joe and Gertrude Wiersma and was named “Geraldine” after a special aunt. She lived with her family on a farm near Hull, Iowa and at 17 years old moved to Orange City, Iowa. There were three older brothers; John, Gary, and Stanley. Two years later sister Joyce arrived in the bitter winter of 1935, then baby Rodney came and he lived only three months.
Geri attended Western Christian High in Hull, Iowa and Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa. While at Westmar she met and later married Wayne Begg of Le Mars, Iowa. Together they lived in Blencoe and Correctionville, Iowa before moving to Ankeny in 1953. In 1994 Wayne Begg was killed in a tragic airplane crash. Geri continued to live in Ankeny.
She is survived by her children; Joe (Phyllis) Begg, Charlie (Marilyn) Begg, and Mary Beth Begg, grandchildren; Paul David, Anthony, Shannon, and Chad, two great grandchildren; Hannah and Kozi. Mrs. Cornelia Wiersma. Mrs. Dorye Wiersma, Mrs. Helen Wiersma and Joyce and Elton Koops.
Geri’s background church was Christian Reformed all of her years in Ankeny, her church home was the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She belonged to many organizations in her lifetime, yet was a private person who kept her own counsel and wanted no accolade. She was very much a “people” person.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Ankeny Christian Academy or Mill-Pond Retirement Community.
