Gerri Harfst, age 84, died Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at Kavanagh House with her loving husband Don at her side. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 from 4-6:30 p.m., at the Ankeny Funeral Home (1510 W. First St., Ankeny, Iowa 50023).

Gerri was born on a farm near Pleasant Prairie, Iowa (near the Davenport area) to Vera (Jenkins) and Kenneth Murdock. The family moved to Wilton Junction, Iowa (now known as Wilton) when she was three years old. She was an only child, and only granddaughter, and lived within four blocks of both grandparents. Gerri usually walked to have lunch with her grandmother if she didn’t like what her mom had. She attended Wilton School from 1st thru 12th grade. She had to walk a half a block to get to school. Gerri managed Plumb Jewelry store for a number of years.

Gerri was very active in the dog show world, especially in conformation AKC shows and in showing standard smooth Dachshunds. She was a member of the Columbine Dachshund Club in Colorado, as well as the Dachshund Club of America. Gerri was also active in the Cyclone Country Kennel Club of Ames, and the Des Moines Kennel Club. She liked to help people who wanted a Dachshund, and she enjoyed training the public on proper care and educating them on the clubs. She was somewhat opinionated at times, but it was always for the good of the dogs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Gerri’s name to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (5452 N.E. 22nd St., Des Moines, IA 50313).

Geri, contacted us about doing embroidered letters to mark dog show trophies several years ago. She & Don are wonderful people. I will miss seeing Geri at the dog shows, sorry I missed seeing her death notice earlier or we would have been there. God Bless
Don please take care.

Don and Gerri are some of my most favorite people in dachshunds. Gerri was opinionated, yes, but thank goodness she was! She and Don were ethical, responsible breeders with a keen sense of humor. Gerri kindly hosted the stay of one of my grand champion girls, all the way out from California to Iowa, for a breeding that resulted in my dual champion Lydia. I trusted Gerri to take care of Charlie as if Charlie were her own. Gerri and Don have had dogs of my breeding or closely related dogs, and I have considered them part of my "dog family" for years.

Don is in my thoughts constantly. I hope he is taking care of himself and knows he has friends out in California who are thinking of him. Please take care.

I am so sorry to hear about Geri’s passing. I met Geri through dachshunds and dog shows. Always enjoyed sitting and visiting with her at ringside. I ‘m sure she is enjoying all the dachshunds at the bridge. She will be missed. My sincere sympathy.

Gerri will always be remembered by me for her kindness and acceptance in my life of a son with many problems. She was always there with compassion for him. She was a good neighbor and I shall always be thankful for knowing she was living next door to me. I could always talk to her and enjoyed our conversations over the backyard fence.! Loved the dogs too.
Prayers to Don who loved her and shared her love of dogs too!. pat Schafer
