Howard was born as a fourth child to Homer and Nettie Black on March 23, 1930, in Farlan, Iowa. He graduated from Stuart High School in 1947. Out of high school, he joined the Air Force and was honorably discharged after his stint in Germany.
He met his wife Audrey in Fallon, Nevada. They had 3 children and were married for almost 70 years. He became a highway patrolman for the state of Nevada and was stationed out of the Carson City/Tahoe area for 6 years. Wanting to get back to his roots, he moved his family back to Iowa where he farmed and worked for Oscar Meyer until they closed. After retiring, Howard and his wife spent their winters in Florida, where he was a member of a horseshoe club and domino club.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Raymond and Dale Black, sister Doris Lyons, and one niece Janeann. He is survived by his wife Audrey, his children Larry (Barb) Black of Ankeny, Carol (Craig) Bennington and Randy (Peggy) Black both of Guthrie Center, nephew Duane (Cindy) Lyons, and niece Patty Hayes both of Panora, nephew Jim Black of Tucson, Arizona, 10 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.AnkenyFuneralHome.com for the Black family.
