Hung was born on April 22, 1967 in Vietnam. He graduated from Ankeny High School in 1985 and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Iowa State in 1990. Following college graduation, he had a successful career in graphic design that began with his employment at Kragie Newell (Integer Group). Later he held assistant art director positions at Meredith in Des Moines and Steinmart Corporation in Jacksonville, FL. He also did freelance work for DirectResults.Biz on the NAPA account for many years.
In 1993 he was united in marriage to Lisa Garrison. Their collective love for all animals led Hung to volunteer his time and talents to provide marketing and support to Animal Lifeline of Iowa Shelter.
Hung is survived and loving remembered by his mother, Nu Khanh Luu of Las Vegas; brother, Van Luu of California; sister, Linh (Gary) Hoh of Las Vegas and their children, Andrea Hoh and Tiffany Hoh.
He is also survived by and lovingly remembered by his American parents, Sid and Diane Vander Ploeg; foster brothers, Sam Vander Ploeg and his children Kayden and Kyler Vander Ploeg, Son Le (Christina) of Houston; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Hung is also survived by his former wife, Lisa Luu and his best friend from Ankeny, Dan Fish who provided much caring and support to Hung. The family would like to thank the staff at Bright Kavanagh House for their compassion and excellent care during Hung’s brief stay there.
A celebration of Hung’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, August 4, 2013 at Ankeny Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
