Perry was born in Guthrie County on August 26, 1937, born to Reverend Aldreth Weigel and Vera (Olson) Weigel. He was married to Grace Shaw on July 26, 1959. Grace died on February 8, 2011. He married Ronda Campbell on April 14, 2012.
Perry grew up in a number of towns in central Iowa where his father was a United Methodist minister. Following graduation from Van Meter High School, he attended Cornell College and later graduated from the University of Iowa medical school in 1963. After graduating, Perry returned to Van Meter and joined a medical practice under the mentorship of Dr. Allen Felter (who passed away in 1978). Perry eventually took over the practice, serving Van Meter and several nearby small communities for 35 years. Perry was known for his dedication to providing house calls to his patients at a time when the practice had become increasingly rare. Perry was among the last generation of doctors to maintain this personal, compassionate approach to patient care throughout his career. After retiring from his Van Meter practice, he worked part-time in Adel and Des Moines for a few years.
Perry was a devoted member of the Van Meter United Methodist Church and served as chairman of the building committee when the new church was built in 1974. He served on the Van Meter city council while practicing medicine and was the Dallas County medical examiner for many years. He was actively involved in local housing and infrastructure projects as well as serving the community in multiple ways. He was known for his kind, gentle demeanor and his dedication to serving others.
Preceding him in death were his parents Vera and Aldreth Weigel, his elder brother Keith Weigel, and his first wife Grace Weigel.
He is survived by his wife, Ronda Weigel; three children, Julie Weigel, Kent Weigel, and Andrew Weigel (Keri Neblett); three grandchildren, Jyoti Tuladhar, Tej Tuladhar, and Gibson Neblett.
