Steven Juel Sandvold, age 72, passed away in his home in Ankeny, Iowa on August 2nd, 2024. He was born May 2nd, 1952, to Lois Jean (Sorensen) and Juell Olaf Sandvold of Nevada, Iowa. As a child, he gained an invaluable enthusiasm for cooking, gardening, and spending time outdoors. Growing up, Steve greatly enjoyed regular family fishing vacations to Lake of the Woods, Canada.
Steve operated his own grain bin building business before obtaining a degree in Accounting from Iowa State University and becoming a certified public accountant. Steve owned three Liberty Tax offices in Des Moines until his retirement. In 1987, Steve met his future wife Marcia Ann (Lange) in a grocery store in Ames, Iowa. A few days later, they attended the ballet performance of world-renowned Mikhail Baryshnikov. They married on January 14th, 1990. Together, they raised two children, Michael Juel and Olivia Fei, in a loving home with a large backyard filled with berry bushes, apple, cherry, plum, and pear trees, and flower/vegetable/herb gardens organized and diligently tended to by Steve and Marcia. The family embarked each summer on road trips to various National Parks and Monuments.
Steve was a skillful handyman, life-long fisherman, avid reader, and passionate fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He also loved to play basketball and cook delicious meals with his family. His talent for embellished storytelling will be sorely missed. Steve embraced each day with a positive attitude and appreciation for his ability to both learn and share his wealth of knowledge with those around him.
Steve is preceded in death by Marcia, Lois, and Juell. He is survived by his younger siblings, Diane and Robert (Susan) Sandvold, his children, Michael and Olivia, and his cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Food Bank of Iowa or Animal Rescue League of Iowa in Steve’s memory.
