Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Monday, November 21st, 2016 at Ankeny Funeral Home. Following the visitation, a celebration of Steve’s life will be held at 7:00pm at Ankeny Funeral Home where his family and friends will say a few words in the remembrance of Steve.
Steven Curtis Cairns was born October 7th, 1950 in Des Moines, Iowa to William and Leota (Allen) Cairns. He grew up in Maxwell, Iowa and was a graduate of Maxwell High School with the class of 1969. Following graduation, Steve continued his education at Iowa State University before transferring to the University of Denver where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. While in Denver, Steve met his future wife Deborah Cook. The couple were united in marriage on April 23rd, 1977 in Boston and have been blessed with four children, Jason, Ryan, Brittany and Devin.
Steve was proud of his work as a lifelong farmer on the family farm in Maxwell, a mechanic at his shop in Bondurant, as well as the owner of Mr. Gus Farms with the memorable motto of “Mr. Gus is a Good Egg”. Steve had an incredibly strong work ethic and was always on the move doing something.
Steve also enjoyed tinkering in his shop with restoration projects, fixing equipment and catching the local weather on the Weather Channel. Steve enjoyed traveling with his wife Debbie and watching as his children matured and followed their dreams. One of his greatest attributes was being able to joke and make you laugh. Most of all, Steve was the kind of man who was willing to help his friends, family and anyone in need. He really enjoyed helping those he loved.
Those who will deeply miss Steve is his wife Debbie; children, Jason Cairns, Ryan (Bagryana) Cairns, Brittany Cairns and Devin Cairns; siblings, Charles (Shirley) Cairns and Dennis (Cindy) Cairns; brother-in-law, Russell Cook; and his nieces, nephew and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Leota Cairns and mother-in-law, Helen Cook.
