Terry Franklin Miller, 80, of Ankeny, passed away on August 9, 2019 at Sunny View Care Center, where he had resided for two years. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 17 from 9 am to 10:30 am at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1102 NW Weigel Dr., Ankeny, followed immediately by a funeral mass. Private inurnment will be at Oralabor Cemetery.
Terry F. Miller was born Nov. 7, 1938, in Oakland, Iowa, to Elmer L. and Ina E. (Killion) Miller. He attended a one-room country school until 4th grade and graduated from Oakland High School in 1957. He attended Iowa State University briefly, and then was employed as a surveyor for the Iowa Highway Commission. In 1959, he married Joleen Ann Tigges. They traveled on a survey crew until 1961, at which time they moved to Ames. Terry then worked as a draftsman in Detail Bridge Design at the DOT for 35 years, retiring in 1995.
Terry loved to dance. He and Jo met at a dance and continued to pursue this hobby all over the Midwest throughout their married life. He spent many hours playing cribbage with any grandchildren who happened to be visiting. He loved to fish and enjoyed many trips with friends to Minnesota and Canada. Canoeing was another passion and he and his sons floated many rivers in Iowa and the Boundary Waters.
Terry and Jo celebrated 60 years of marriage in July of this year. She survives him, along with son Michael (Tammy) of Ankeny, daughter-in-law Laurie, of Sioux City, and son Thomas (Laura) of Ames. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren: Josh (Keesha) Webster of Boone; Brandon (Jennifer) Miller of West Des Moines; Dustin Miller, USAF Kuwait; Elizabeth (Delphine) Miller of Paris, France; JoAnna (Mick) Scott of Des Moines; Ashley (Ron) Lookingbill of Woodward, Okla.; Theresa (Eric) Edwards of Council Bluffs; Rachel (Ryan) Goetz of Ponca, Neb.; Taylor Miller of Sioux City; Karleigh Miller of Eau Claire, Wisc.; Mackenzie (Keegan) Wright of Newhall; Hannah Miller of Cedar Rapids; and Eli Miller of Newhall. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren; a brother Marion Miller of Ames; a sister Cheradel Althouse of Fremont, Neb.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law Henry and Dominica (Minnie) Tigges, his brothers-in-law George Tigges and Jerry Althouse, and his son, David.
