OBITUARY

Virgie Kay Blair

December 17, 1945February 16, 2020

Virgie Kay Blair, 74, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2020. Visitation will be from 11:00 am-1:00 pm, Friday, February 21, 2020, at Ankeny Funeral Home (1510 W 1st St, Ankeny, IA). A memorial service will follow the visitation at the funeral home at 1:00 pm.

Virgie was born December 17, 1945, to Virgil and Betty (Schwarz) Johnson in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She later married Roger Blair on February 4, 1977. They eventually made their home in Ankeny where they raised their family.

Kay had a friendly and sincere smile. She offered lots of love and laughter as well as advice and wisdom to those she loved. She became known to many as “Grandma Kay” over the years to friends that became like family to her.

Kay loved baking and she is well known for her pumpkin bars and filled cupcakes. She enjoyed sewing and embroidering - her homemade gifts were the best. She was always up for the challenge of finding a good sale while shopping. Reading and computer games were some of her other favorite past times.

Her true passion was for her family. She loved Dad dearly and that was evident to those around them. She enjoyed spending time with her kids but her face would light up when her grandkids were around. She loved going to their sporting events and activities to cheer them on. We enjoyed many family vacations whether it be fishing in Minnesota or our last “staycation” which was a huge hit with her. Kay is survived by her loving husband, Roger; children, Rand (Kelly) Blair, Trevi (Jason) Sandin and Andrea (Bill) Bingaman, Robin Deaton; grandchildren, Brandon, Connor, Brinley, Brody, Bella, Jack, Audrey and Troy.

Kay is preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Betty Johnson as well as her siblings, Rea Hawxby, Roger Johnson and Judy Morris.

She will be missed dearly but we will carry her in our hearts forever.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Above and Beyond Cancer Foundation or Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.

Best friend for over 10 years ever since I asked her daughter if she thought Kay would like to go to lunch sometime. We hit it off from the first time I met her and had many wonderful times together. Laughing, some tears and always sharing our thoughts, problems, concerns and memories. My heart is broken at her passing. But the memories will last forever ❤️

Roger,

--This from a classmate of 1959.--
I was very sorry to learn of your great loss. A marriage of about 43 years is a remarkable thing. Time does not heal all wounds but it makes them a little easier to bear. You have my deepest sympathy.

In Christian Love and Peace,

Roger and kids. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
I have many good memories with Kay. She was not only my neighbor for a lot of years but a good friend. Kay always welcomed the kids and enjoyed having them around. Whenever Ben went missing I knew to check with Kay . Talking for hours solving all the problems of the world but mostly about our kids. Once we started talking it could go for hours or until one of our phones lost battery. I will miss her. Thoughts and prayers.
Connie
