Adrian Roger Pothus

Adrian “Roger” Pothus was born in Sheffield, England, to Joan and Adrian Pothus on August 23, 1946. The family immigrated to the United States in Roger’s elementary school years. Soon after they moved, Roger’s mother passed away. Thereafter, Roger's dad married Eve, who became Roger’s beloved new mom. Both parents preceded Roger in death. Roger attended Michigan State University, and business brought him to his home, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Roger's first endeavor in retail clothing was selling bell-bottom jeans from the trunk of his car. This soon led him to his first store, Paraphernalia, on State Street. He opened Renaissance in 1971 on Maynard Street; after several moves within Ann Arbor, Renaissance remains open at 306 South Main St. He added Van Boven Shoes in the Nickels Arcade to his successful retail locations in 2014. Roger weathered the many changes in retail operations, from malls to online shopping, to countless fashion trends, and more. His relentless drive, impeccable personal style, and attention to details carried him through. Roger was a strong advocate of locally owned businesses. He had recently been honored as a guest of the Italian Trade Commission at an exclusive event in Milan, Italy.

Roger was very spontaneous and always up for an adventure. He was a lover of music, art, fashion, food, cars, and boats. His passion was boating — he was happiest at the helm.

Roger had a soft spoken, kind and patient demeanor that attracted a wide variety of loyal friends through the years. He was generous with his time, and his mentoring and encouragement benefited many. He is survived by an enduring family of friends. Roger had many great companions through his life, including most recently Rennie, his Lhasa Apso, and Sasha, his cat.

Our dear Roger truly was a Renaissance Man.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to WEMU Radio, Ann Arbor Summer Festival, Michigan Theater, University Musical Society. There will be a celebration of Roger’s life in the early summer, details to be announced in the future.
