Al was born in Saline to Webb and Ada May Harwood (nee:Bachman). He grew up on the family crop and dairy farm in Saline. He graduated from Saline High School and Michigan State University where he obtained a degree in Agricultural Education. After graduating College he worked in manufacturing at Pittsfield Products but spent most of his career owning and operating John Colone Chrysler in Pinckney.
He served on several boards including the Elks and Michigan Suffolk Sheep Association. He was a member of the Michigan Sheep Producer's association and a 4-H leader in Livingston and Washtenaw Counties.
Al was a renowned sheep enthusiast who established himself both as a breeder and judge. He had the privilege of judging many County Fairs in Michigan. He earned several awards throughout his lifetime including; FFA Outstanding State Farmer Gold Award in 1957, Michigan Purebred Sheep Producer of the Year in 1998 and MSU's Block and Bridal Honoree in 2009.
In 1961, Al married the love of his life, Marsha. They had two children; Susie Harwood-Brown (Jay) and Billy Harwood (Tami). Al and Marsha also have three grandchildren; Zak Harwood, Ty Harwood and Jaycie Brown. Al also is survived by his sister, Janice Harwood.
Al's family will hold a Visitation from 2:00-8:00 pm on Tuesday, August 16 at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. 4th Ave, Ann Arbor 48104. A Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 17th at the Funeral Home. Visitation on Wednesday will begin at 10:30 am. Burial will take place immediately following the Funeral at Harwood Cemetery.
