Bernhard Jubin

Bernhard “Bernie” Jubin went to his heavenly home on May 8, 2024 at the age of 91. He was the beloved husband of Helga (Lengnick) Jubin for over 65 years; loving father of Chris (Terrance) Ballantyne, Tom (Liz Zerga) Jubin, and Karen (Jon) Drews; caring grandfather of Lynn (Mark) Duerr, Sierra Jubin, Nathan (Anna) Drews, Rachel Ballantyne, and Eric (Emily) Drews; and adoring great-grandfather of Ella Drews. Bernie is survived by his siblings: Leo Jubin, Genie Barbee and Herbert (Janice) Jubin. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Helmut Jubin.

Bernie was born on March 24, 1933 to ethnic German parents, Wilhelm and Emma Jubin, in Teosin, a German community in East Prussia, now Poland. During WWII when the Russians invaded, the family fled to West Germany and settled in the Harz Mountains until they immigrated to the United States in 1951, settling in North Dakota. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and was sent to Germany where he served from 1953 to 1955 and became a U.S. citizen in Munich. He moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he met and fell in love with Helga, a fellow German immigrant, at The Old German restaurant.

After working for Hutzel Plumbing for 25 years, he received his Master Plumber License and became an inspector for the City of Ann Arbor. He retired in 1998 but never stopped using his skills to generously help family and friends with projects.

Bernie was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ann Arbor since 1955, where he served on the Board of Elders, Stewardship Committee, and Board of Trustees. He spent countless years maintaining the church and school properties and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity.

Bernie valued education for his children and sacrificed for them to have opportunities that were not available to him. He enjoyed reading, traveling, square dancing, soccer, nature, history and playing euchre. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, and renovated the family cottage to create a special place for memories.

Bernie had the ability to make everyone feel special with his kind, witty, and generous nature. A man of deep faith and integrity, he now enjoys eternity in the presence of his Savior, Jesus.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 15, 2024 from 3:30pm until 7:00pm at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. 4th Avenue, Ann Arbor. Funeral Service will be held Thursday, May 16, 2024 at 11:00am (Funeral Visitation 10:00am) with a Memorial Luncheon to follow at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 420 W. Liberty Street, Ann Arbor. Burial will be held Thursday, May 16, 2024 at 2:30pm at Washtenong Memorial Park, 3771 Whitmore Lake Road, Ann Arbor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 420 W. Liberty Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48103.
