Brad, as he was known to his family and many friends, was born November 13, 1962, in Martinez, California, the son of the late Chester Burnidge Handley and Janet Lorraine Maasdam. He grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and following his honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a satellite and communications specialist, Brad moved to Michigan to be closer to his father.
While attending Washtenaw Community College, Brad met the love of his life, Paula Janice Cooch through mutual friends. What began as a college friendship developed into a connection that would last a lifetime, and they were married at West Park in Ann Arbor on August 17, 1989.
After graduating with his business degree, Brad spent many years honing his business and customer service skills in various jobs. This gave him a strong foundation to support Paula when she started her own business in 2007. The business also gave him the opportunity to travel and attend science-fiction conventions, Comic-Con events, and other gatherings they enjoyed.
Brad had a bright, colorful personality and a natural ability to make friends wherever he went. He was outgoing, community-minded, and always willing to lend a hand. His strong Christian faith helped to shape his life, and if a friend or someone he cared about was in need, Brad was the kind of person who would do whatever he could to help. He taught his children by example and was very proud that they followed his lead.
As an Iowa Hawkeye fan, Brad wore his black and gold with pride. He especially enjoyed watching the Hawkeyes take on the University of Michigan, and he was thrilled to see Iowa defeat Michigan by one point. For Brad, being a Hawkeye fan was more than simply watching a game.
Brad also had a deep appreciation for history. Family vacations often included an unexpected side trip to visit a historical marker or explore a place with an interesting story. He loved to read about history and, perhaps even more, loved sharing what he learned with his children. Brad never shied away from a good conversation or a spirited debate, particularly when it involved history or politics. His curiosity, strong opinions, and enthusiasm for learning made even the simplest conversation with him memorable.
Above all, Brad was devoted to his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Paula; his children, Christopher (Crystal) Burke and their daughters, Luna and Solara; Marie (Rob) Barksdale and their children, Robert, Nova, Gabriel, Caleb, Benjamin, and Astraea; and Nicklas Handley; his sister, Sharla (Randy) Ryals; his stepmother, Bev Hanni; and many extended family members.
Muehlig Funeral Chapel of Ann Arbor is honored to serve Brad's family. Online condolences may be expressed to the family by visiting www.MuehligAnnArbor.com.
