Carl David Johns

Carl was born on March 11, 1949, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to Leamon Johns and Evie Marie Burrow. He was raised in Ypsilanti and graduated from Willow Run High School prior to attending Michigan State University. After college, Carl moved to Ann Arbor to be with the love of his life, Elaine. Together, they married, raised their family in the home Carl built, and became deeply rooted in the community they loved—especially the beloved Village of Dixboro.

Carl was a man of many passions and interests, and he lived life with curiosity, adventure, and a strong sense of community. He loved spending time outdoors, hunting in the woods of Northern Michigan and fly fishing its rivers. In his younger years, he practiced karate and rode a Harley-Davidson. He made custom longbows and served as both president and an active member of the Michigan Longbow Association. He was also a member of the Johnson Creek Regulators cowboy action shooting club, where he was proudly known as Marshall CJ Lawless.

Closer to home, Carl was a proud volunteer at the Dixboro Farmers Market and a familiar face on the golf course, where he spent most Monday afternoons with his friends. He was deeply spiritual and committed to his faith. He was a long-term member of the Dixboro United Methodist Church, where he volunteered in multiple roles throughout the course of his life, including serving as a lay speaker for several years.

Most of all, Carl loved his family. He never missed an opportunity to tell them how much they meant to him, and his love for them was one of the most defining parts of his life. He rarely missed a soccer, basketball, or volleyball game for his granddaughters.

Carl will also be fondly remembered throughout the community as the longtime co-owner of Ann Arbor's beloved Treasure Mart. For many years, he could be found behind the counter, unmistakable in his cowboy hat, welcoming customers and becoming a familiar and cherished part of the Ann Arbor community.

Carl is survived by his loving family: Jennifer, Nate, Mike, Shelley, Natalie, Kendall, Don, Liz, Diane, David, Libby, Madison, and Silas, as well as a slew of dear friends who will miss him immensely. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elaine, in 2020.

Carl leaves behind a life filled with family, friendship, adventure, faith, craftsmanship, and community. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Carl’s life will take place on Saturday, September 26th, at 12 pm at the Dixboro Village Green, with a reception to follow at Moonwink’s Café and Tavern. The ceremony will take place outdoors, so those attending should bring a lawn chair to sit in.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Carl's memory may be made to the Dixboro United Methodist Church or The ALS Association.
