Don Lowell Fisher, 71, of Ann Arbor died July 31, 2012, with his family by his side. He was born on June 14th, 1941 in Bountiful Utah. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ellen Fisher, his older brother Byron Fisher, his younger sister Carol Harper, and his four children (Tamara, Victoria, Todd, and Brent) and 17 grandchildren. He grew up loving skiing, racquetball, tennis, and especially swimming. He also loved singing and performed with the University Musical Society Choral Society singing Handel’s Messiah. An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served a two and a half year mission for the church in Germany at the age of 19. Lowell graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA and MS in Zoology. He then received a PhD from the University of Minnesota in Anatomy, with a research interest in Embryology. Lowell developed Multiple Sclerosis in his early thirties, which led to many physical limitations. While his physical limitations advanced, he enjoyed the unfailing support of his wife and family, members of his church, and his fellow faculty members at the medical school. Despite his many setbacks, he took strength in his faith and remained upbeat and positive. He was known for his warm greeting and happy wide smile. A consummate teacher, he enjoyed his work and being useful to others. He served in his church over the years in many capacities; however, his favorite areas of service were teaching the youth and leading the singing. He enjoyed teaching and mentoring students as a professor of Anatomy at the University of Michigan. He was awarded the Kaiser Permanente award for teaching excellence and many other awards. He loved teaching and continued teaching as an emeritus professor until his death. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 5th from 6-8pm at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel. The Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Monday, August 6th with visitation from 9:30 - 10:30 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Saline, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. www.muehligannarbor.com.
