Doug was born on December 8, 1942, in Ann Arbor to the late Alfred L. and Agnes (VanKampen) Frey. He attended school in Ann Arbor and graduated from Ann Arbor Pioneer High School in 1960.
Following graduation, Doug began a long career with Bill Knapp’s Restaurant. As a dedicated and hardworking employee, he worked his way up through the organization becoming a regional manager overseeing locations throughout Ann Arbor and Plymouth. After a very rewarding time, Doug took an early retirement, and subsequently briefly co-owned a racehorse named First Ace. He then joined Chelsea Milling Company “Jiffy Mix”. He worked in production for many years before his second retirement.
A proud patriot, Doug honorably served in the Army National Guard, a commitment that reflected his deep love for his country and sense of duty.
While working at Bill Knapp’s, Doug met Alice, and many years later the two reconnected. Together they shared an incredible bond and became an important part of each other’s lives. They were rarely apart.
Doug was a true people-person who deeply enjoyed time spent with friends and family. He loved cooking for gatherings, whether it was barbeque, fresh-caught fish, or meals shared around the table with those he cared about most.
Doug also enjoyed time spent at his cabin in Gladwin, Michigan, where weekends were often filled with hunting, fishing, and laughter among friends. He organized annual week-long fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada that became treasured traditions for many years.
A devoted sports fan, Doug especially loved cheering on the University of Michigan “GO BLUE!”. He also enjoyed taking drives through the countryside in his truck, appreciating the simple pleasures of life.
Doug is survived by his sister, Gail (Fred) Colvin; nephews, Brian (Traci) Colvin and Mark (Jennifer) Colvin; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; special friend and companion, Alice Jordan, and forever best friend, Ray Roach.
