Fred was born November 21, 1948 in Ann Arbor, Michigan to William and Mary (Downer) Ullrich. Fred was the devoted husband of 27 years to Elizabeth, beloved brother to Doris Miller (Larry) and Carol Slomiany (Wayne). He also leaves behind cousins that were like brothers, Steve and Dick (Carol) McTaggart, a number of nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews and a number of cousins.
Fred lived in the Ann Arbor area most of his life except for a short time in Ohio. He graduated from St. Thomas High School and Eastern Michigan University with a degree in business. He worked a number of years at Ulrich’s Bookstore and stayed in merchandising most of his career.
Fred had a love for life that was infectious shown by his ever-present smile and a quick wit and generous heart as well as knack of making people laugh. Fred loved his wife and family, sports (especially Michigan football), travel, playing practical jokes, his high school friends, the German Park, Knight’s restaurant and any meal that included Grouper.
Fred had many health challenges in his life. He survived a heart attack, lung cancer, and other ailments, but the one that he fought with grace and courage but could not survive was Alzheimer’s disease, which he suffered with the last five years.
Fred’s legacy of laughter, loyalty and love will be carried on by those who knew and adored him.
Donations in Fred’s name can be made to Medical Team Hospice, who provided passionate care for Fred and were a great comfort to our family. We are thankful for Elizabeth, for her devotion and faithful care for Fred, as well as, other relatives and friends who were very helpful to Fred. We are grateful to God to have had Fred in our lives.
May he rest in Peace.
