Galina Lozovskaya passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, twelve days after she turned 98. She was born on July 2, 1928, in Moscow, to Sofia Abramovna Shamberg and Solomon Abramovich Lozovsky. After finishing high school, she graduated from Moscow State University, with specialization in English Language and Literature.
After her father was arrested, imprisoned, and executed during Stalin’s antisemitic campaign of the late 1940s-early 1950s, Galina and her mother were forced to leave Moscow and settle in Petropavlovsk (Kazakhstan). There, Galina was introduced to Mark Khaynovskiy by a mutual friend, while out on a walk, as she liked to recall. They married in 1955 and moved to Moscow, where they raised two daughters, Natalia and Alla. Galina and Mark were together until Mark’s death on February 3, 2023.
Galina was very smart, intellectually curious, and sharp witted. She loved literature, music, and art, and she brought up her daughters, and later grandchildren, to appreciate everything that culture had to offer. Warm and loving, she always put her family first. Her friends and coworkers appreciated her dependability, fairness, and loyalty.
In 1993, Galina and Mark, then in their 60s, came to America, together with Alla, her husband Leon, and their daughter Sonja. It was not an easy decision to make, but they understood that this was in the best interests of the entire family. They joined Natalia, her husband Leonid, and their grandchildren, Dina and Victor, in Colorado. After several years, Galina and Mark settled in Ann Arbor near Alla, Leon, and Sonja. Galina enjoyed Ann Arbor: she was making new friends, serving as a volunteer usher at the Choral Union concerts, and traveling. Always there for her family, she helped raise her grandchildren and took care of family pets.
Galina will be missed by her daughters, Alla Karnovsky and Natalia Lozovsky, her sons-in-law Leon Karnovsky and Leo Beigelman; her grandchildren, Sonja Karnovsky and her husband Kip Borkholder, Dina Beigelman, and Victor Beigelman and his wife Emily Kabalkin; along with extended family and dear friends.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mark, Galina was preceded in death by her sisters, Vera Dridzo and Milena Lozovskaya.
Private family burial will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery.
Those wishing to share a memory or offer condolences to the family are invited to attend the memorial service at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 18 at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Ann Arbor (www.MuehligAnnArbor.com).
If you would like to honor Galina’s memory you are welcome to make a donation to the Humane Society of Huron Valley (https://www.hshv.org/give/donate/).
