George Edward Latimer

Born May 18, 1937

George Edward Latimer, age 75, died unexpectedly on March 2, 2013. United with Mary Gray, father to Scott and Tim, brother to Wilma, he leaves behind an extraordinary career, and family and friends who loved him and had hoped for more time. George was born May 18, 1937 in South Lyon, Michigan to Val Melvin and Beatrice Marie (Parks) Latimer and was raised on the family farm in Plainfield, Michigan. Hunting, fishing, and farm work filled his days. Not long after graduation from Stockbridge High School he began his work for the University of Michigan. George retired in 2012 after a storied fifty three year career that began in general construction, moved to electronics and engineering, and ended as a Research Project Engineer with the Department of Astronomy. At the University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory, George was involved in many research initiatives and was internationally known throughout the radio astronomy community. His work lives on at the Peach Mountain observatory, which in many ways was his home. Interests were wide and varied for George, from mechanical and electrical engineering to bowling, softball, and golf. He enjoyed traveling with Mary, including visits to PGA tournaments and fishing at Lake Worth Pier. George enjoyed baseball and University of Michigan sports. George leaves Mary, who filled his life and added joy to each day. He also leaves his son Scott (wife Nancy), and grandchildren Ellianna and Oliver George as well as his son Tim, (wife Shannon), and granddaughters Olivia and Louisa. He will also be deeply missed by his sister Wilma Keiser (husband Don), as well as nieces Aldonna Raciborski, Jeanne Keiser, Linda Zenz, and Donald Keiser. Visitation will be at Muehlig Funeral Chapel (403 S. Fourth Avenue, Ann Arbor) on Tuesday, March 5 from 5:00-8:00, with a celebration of life at 7:00. George loved nature, and animals of all kinds. Memorial contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Huron Valley, 3100 Cherry Hill Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48105 (734) 662-5585 (

OMG. I am so sorry to have taken this long to learn of George's passing. George and I worked together at Peach Mountain for several years, bowled on teams together and played golf. I always considered George one of my best friends. He was a very interesting person, a loving father, and a good friend. I moved away from Michigan in 1970. We kept in touch for awhile, but then families took more of our time. I have thought of him often and am sorry I didn't try harder to stay in touch. My sincerest sympathy for your loss.

To the Family of George Latimer,
My sincere sympathy,
I was so sorry to hear that George had passed. I was a frequent visitor to the woods of Peach Mt. over the last few summers, and always preceded my visits with a call to George to check if was OK to park up at the observatory. He was always gracious and helpful with comments (mosquitos are bad today- bring plenty of bug spray). Our last phone contact was last June when he expressed looking forward to retirement. I wished him well, and still do.

George was one of a kind and will be sadly missed. I have wonderful memories of George and the times we (George, my sisters family and myself) spent out at Peach Mountain. We hiked, went sledding learned about the dish and what George did. I even spent a day with George looking for wild turkeys. The only turkeys out there were George and I. George was a wonderful friend to all that new him. I'll miss you George! My thoughts and prayers are with all of the family.

I will always remember George Latimer as one of the most caring and giving persons I have ever known. He was a big part of my life growing up and I will never forget the times we spent together. He was a positive influence on my life in so many ways. My thoughts and prayers to the entire family.

My husband Barry and I worked with George for many years up at the mountain. He would be there all hours of the day and night. He was a very interesting man and what a character too! We moved to Stockbridge and became neighbors to his lovely mother Bea. Miss her everyday but will remember fondly the both of them. So sorry for your loss...
