George Thomas York III

Tommy was preceded in death by his grandparents and mother-in-law Merrell Harkema. He is survived by his wife and best friend Julie Harkema, sons and lights of his life Lincoln and Aedan York (Marly Fortin), loving parents MaryGrace Carroll and George Thomas York Jr., brother Jamie York (Colleen), sister Molly York Stelovich, father-in-law Jim Harkema (Jacquie), sister-in-laws Susan Harkema (Van Gunter) and Sallie Harkema (Mark Cesarz), nieces and nephews Ben, Josh and Sam York, Anten and Madox Stelovich, Jake and Shae Cesarz, Jordan and Camryn Gunter and Kaelon Harkema as well as many York and Harkema aunts, uncles, and cousins, and innumerable and diverse friends who he loved as family.

A community builder, and friend to all, Tommy was one of the finest men this world has ever known. A loyal supporter of family, friends and local businesses, over the last 25 years he crafted the largely popular local business, York Food & Drink, into a second home for the Ann Arbor community. His passing leaves us devastated and at a loss for the right words to express both our deep pain and immense gratitude for the chance to have known him.

Tommy lived every moment making this world a better place. Through his consistent kindness, encouragement, generosity, patience, empathy, open mindedness and humility he positively impacted the lives of everyone. Tommy was always willing to lend a helping hand; no matter the time, place, or circumstance. He would be there no questions asked. Tommy was a rare blend of all the right things. He poured his heart and soul into each and every moment with every person he ever met, asking nothing in return. The world was a brighter and warmer place with him in it, and now it is our turn, to take the example he set and the wisdom he imparted on us all to love and encourage one another to become the best version of ourselves.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 13 from 3 to 6 p.m., with remarks at 3:30 p.m., at York Food & Drink, in Ann Arbor. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Swoop’s Food Pantry, Common Cycle, Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources, or the cause of your choice.
