Herbert Ewart Smith

Age 87, of Ann Arbor, Michigan passed away on 2/28/12. Herb was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on 6/11/24. His terrific sense of humor will be greatly missed. Herb graduated high school from Franklin Academy in Malone, New York where he was actively involved with the Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He went on to earn a BS Degree from the University of Michigan College of Engineering. His time at the U of M was interrupted while he served his Country in the European Theater during World War II. After receiving a Masters Degree from the Chrysler Institute in 1949 he began a 32 year career with Chrysler Corporation. He retired from Chrysler in 1981 as Plant Manager of the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Belvidere, Illinois. After retirement Herb spent summers at Lake Titus in northern New York State and moved to Sun City West, Arizona in 1992. He returned to the Ann Arbor area in 2006. Herb was involved with many civic organizations through the years including Boy Scouts of America, Kiwanis Club, U of M Clubs and the Masons. He also served on the Board of Trustees at Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois. Herb was preceded in death by his wife Mildred (Scherdt) in 1998 after 50 wonderful years of marriage. He is survived by his daughter Susan S. Franke (Art) of Ann Arbor, Michigan and son Stephen H. Smith (Terri) of Phoenix, Arizona. Grandchildren include Elizabeth Daly (Ryan) and Arthur J. Franke all of New York City, Robert Franke of Madison, Wisconsin, Eric Smith of Newport Beach, California, Sarah Smith of Tempe, Arizona. Herb will be missed by many nieces and nephews as well as his dedicated caregiver, Cheryl Hegwood. A Memorial Service is planned for 2pm on April 21, 2012 in the chapel at Huron Woods, 5361 McAuley Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48106.
