Ila was born in Elwell Michigan on July 7, 1931, the youngest child of Homer and Ottilie Langworthy. She was preceded in death by her three older brothers: Glen Langworthy; Earl Langworthy (killed in action during the Battle of Normandy following D-Day in 1944); and Lee Langworthy.
Ila graduated valedictorian of Alma High School class of 1949, and enrolled at Central Michigan University where she earned a degree in medical technology. At a Freshman Mixer dance in September of 1949, Ila met the love of her life, Donald Majeske, who survives. Ila and Don were married on January 8, 1955, moved to Ann Arbor in 1957, and ballroom danced their way through life together.
Ila had a diverse career. After completing her bachelor’s degree, Ila worked as a Medical Technologist at U of M hospital, a tour guide at Pfizer (Parke-Davis), and a teacher at Stretch & Sew - all while raising three children. Ila took pride in the bakery (Baker’s Corner) that she built, owned and managed at the Briarwood Mall from 1975 to 1985. While running her own business, Ila returned to college and earned an MBA from Eastern Michigan University. Ila’s career then included consulting for startup dental practices and general managing a small international production company, with Ila finishing her career at age 84 as a self-employed accountant.
Ila also had a creative side. Along with her partner Don, Ila square danced with the Swinging A’s, line danced with the Pittsfield Seniors, and polka danced at festivals throughout the world. Ila made braided rugs and heirloom quilts for her family. While managing Baker’s Corner, Ila decorated and sold cakes. In her later years, Ila took water color painting and pencil drawing classes. Her work now hangs in the homes and offices of her children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors.
Ila is survived by her husband of 68 years Don, her three children: Katherine (Paul Gencur) Majeske; Ann (Tom Shiel) Majeske; and Karl (Carrie) Majeske, her three grandchildren: Hattie (Karl) Kettelhut; Blair Majeske; and Zeke Majeske, and one great grandchild: Karl Kettelhut, Jr.
A celebration of Ila’s life will be held later this year.
