Jean was born in 1923 in Detroit, the third child of the late Justin R McCarthy and Marguerite (Lannen) McCarthy. She attended the Angell School and then graduated from St. Theresa’s High School in Detroit. She lived most of her life in the greater Detroit area and in Summerland Key, Florida.
She married her husband Michael Nicholas Zelenock on July 1, 1944 with a youthful confidence that he would come back from the war and they would live together forever. He came back and their forever together lasted until September, 2011 when he died.
Jean was an avid and generous gardener and arts and crafter. Friends and family have many Jean original creations—ceramics, needlepoint, afghans, customized sweat shirts. While she lived in Florida, she crocheted blankets for newborn babies of Navy personnel at the Key West Naval Air Station.
She was predeceased by her brother James, her sisters Justine and Ann and by her son Michael Justin Zelenock. She is survived by five children: Gerald, Nancy, Ralph, Robert, and Thomas and their families.
