Joan Pauline Zubl, age 84, of Ann Arbor, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Brookdale West of Ann Arbor, surrounded by "her boys", son David Zubl and son-in-law Ron Andrews, and the wonderful caregivers she came to love.
Joan was born on December 8, 1941, in Postell, North Carolina, to the late Matthew Lee and Pauline (Hamilton) Chumley. She was raised in Tennessee and often shared fond memories of time spent with her great-grandparents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and what she affectionately described as “billions of cousins.”
After graduating from high school, Joan pursued a nursing degree and began working at the Univerisity of Tennessee Memorial Hospital. It was there, in the hospital cafeteria, that she met Charles (Chuck) Zubl. Chuck was working part-time at the hospital while studying to become an accountant. The two formed an immediate connection and were married in 1963, beginning a loving partnership that would span many decades.
A lifelong lover of the arts, Joan later returned to school, earning both her bachelor's and master's degrees in Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Tennessee. She went on to teach theater and drama at both the high school and college levels, inspiring students with her creativity, passion, and love of storytelling.
Joan also had a lifelong affection for animals. From a beloved pet chicken during her childhood to the many dogs and cats she welcomed into her home over the years, she had a special bond with animals. Every creature fortunate enough to cross her path found a loving and caring friend in Joan, including her cat Lily who was with her until the end.
Above all else, Joan cherished her family. She and Chuck moved to the Ann Arbor area in 2004 to be closer to their boys. She enjoyed reading, singing in choirs, sharing stories from her remarkable life, and settling in to watch a good Western or classic gangster movie.
Joan embraced life with enthusiasm and never let age define her. In 2008, she proudly got the first of many tattoos, demonstrating her adventurous spirit and willingness to continue trying new things.
For the past three years, Joan was a vibrant member of the Brookdale West of Ann Arbor community in Ann Arbor. She became known for her spunky personality, dramatic flair, and genuine affection for both residents and staff. The caregivers at Brookdale brought joy, companionship, and comfort to Joan's life, and her family will forever be grateful for the love and care they provided.
Joan is survived by her children, David (Ron Andrews) Zubl and Amy (Jerry) O'Neal; her grandchildren, Mary Grace and Andrew; and many extended family members.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chuck Zubl.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joan's honor to the Humane Society of Huron Valley.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 122 W Michigan Ave, Saline, MI 48176, on Saturday, June 13, at 2:00pm (visitation at 1:30pm) with Pastor Jim Coran officiating.
