John "Jack" Muirhead Dentler

Jack passed on early Thursday morning after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife Jean, son Scott (Norma) and daughter Sandy (Jerry). 5 Grandchildren Caleb (Donna), Donna (Kyle), Laura (Nate), Sam and Evan (Megan). 4 Great-grandchildren Travis, Molly, Alex and Michael. Jack met his wife Jean at Kalamazoo College where he started radio station WJMD (his initials) where he ran the studio until graduation in 1948. The station is still operational and using the same call letters. Through the 1960’s he volunteered for the Willingboro, NJ fire and police departments while working for Pfizer in New York. He retired from Pfizer in 1988. Since retiring he volunteered much of his time when not traveling. He spent many summers as camp host at Mears SP in Pentwater. His sailing friends nick-named him Hobie Jack. He assisted with the badminton program at the AA Rec Center until a few years ago. The last 14 years were spent volunteering his time with the Ann Arbor Police and Fire Departments, his second family. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 from 2:00 until time of Memorial Service at 3:30 at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel, Ann Arbor. In lieu of flowers donations may be offered to the Citizens Police Academy in c/o the Ann Arbor Police Department.

Dear Grandma Jean and family!

Thank you for sharing Jack with us! I say this from my two families - My AAPD family - Jack was always a calm sight, with his gentle smile, and exuberant heart. His kindness, dedication and love for all of us was un-measurable. From my personal family, Grandpa Jack and Grandma Jean were a part of our lives, they were there for all the highs and lows in my life, from the birth of my son to the death of my father.

Jack has touched and enriched so many lives, if you did not have the honor to know Jack, you missed someone great in this life!!!!

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to this wonderful and kindred spirit. Knowing that his love for life, his embrace of humanity and the significant imprint he had left in this world had made it a better place to be. Thank you Grandma Jean and all the Dentler Family for sharing this amazing man with us! May your hearts be filled with memories and warmth, knowing the incredible legacy he has left behind! I love you Grandpa Jack may you rest in eternal peace and may God grant peace to all who knew you!
With love,
Adele, Waleed and Danny

Our involvement with the Ann Arbor Police, Fire and Court Academy and CERT team activities over the past few years was enriched by Jack's happy, joyful presence.

Jack was always on hand to photograph the Ann Arbor CERT Team's meetings and participation in community events. Whenever I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder I didn’t need to look to know that it was Jack with his mile-wide smile, standing behind me and asking "How's it going?"

We will miss you, Jack.

Few people have such a positive and prolific impact as “Jack” has had in the Ann Arbor Safety Services. His presence will be missed and his contributions hard to replace.

Thank you Jean, Scott, and Sandy for sharing his time with us.

Thank you Jack for all that you have been.

Jack, with his cheeky quips and easy going meanderings through the Ann Arbor Police Department as he captured important moments in our lives, will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I remember Jack coming into our t-shirt shop with Jean always having a great story to tell me and always with a smile to share along with his amazing puzzles he would give me.

Jack was one of my favorite summer “residents” that would visit me when I worked at Sassafras Tee’s during the late 80’s, early 90’s in Pentwater. My sisters, Joey and Amy Potter, also enjoyed seeing him when they worked at Charles Mears State Park. No matter where we ran into each other, he seemed genuinely glad to see me, as I was him! I still have several pictures that he’d taken of myself and friends or family either while I was working or participating in the Pentwater Homecoming Parades. Jack was always so happy enjoying Pentwater life in the summer. I just loved seeing him each summer, and then even after I no longer worked in town. His smile and love of our little town will be missed! Sail on Jack!

We just can’t believe that Jack has left his life here on earth. He was one that we all thought he would live forever! He was such a treasure to all who knew and loved him.
