John D. Segall, M.D. was born in Detroit on October 17, 1946, the son of Bernard F. and Carol Thorner Segall. He attended the University of Michigan where he received both B.A. and M.D. degrees and where he met his wife of 39 years, Carole Flax Segall who survives him. He completed his internal medicine residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, CO and his neurology residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He practiced neurology at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor for 34 years where he was loved and respected by patients, colleagues, and students. He received many honors and awards for his dedication to medical education throughout the years.
He is also survived by his daughter Lauren Segall and son Bradley (Caroline) Segall, both of Ann Arbor; his mother-in-law Serene Flax of San Francisco; his brother Thomas (Anne) Segall, M.D. of Ann Arbor; brother-in-law Robert (Susan) Flax of San Francisco; sister-in-law Patrice (Craig) Thomas of Ypsilanti; and nieces Margaret Segall (Alex) D’Amico of New York, Alison Hainline of Washington, DC, and Sarah Flax of Billings, MT.
John led a richly fulfilling life with love for his family, devotion to his patients, and dedication to his work. He lived with great integrity as a husband, father, and professional. He profoundly touched many lives and will be greatly missed by those who knew him and loved him.
A funeral service will be held at Temple Beth Emeth, 2309 Packard Avenue, Ann Arbor on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 10:00 AM. It will be followed by a private family burial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Research or Neurology Education for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, both at St Joseph Mercy Hospital,
