John "Jack" Peter Weidenbach died at home on February 17, 2024 after an extended illness. He was to born Vera Boos Weidenbach and Joseph Weidenbach in Detroit on March 31, 1924. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II, receiving an honorable discharge at its end with the rank of captain. From 1948 to 1966 he was the manager of Detroit Willow Run Airport, and after it ceased commercial operations joined the administrative staff of the University of Michigan, where he occupied several senior positions until his retirement as Director of Athletics in 1994. Throughout his career he accepted a number of leadership posts in university and community service while also enjoying free time as a dedicated downhill skier, marathon runner, tennis player and world traveler. Above all he was mindful that he had led a very fortunate life made possible in significant part by the care and counsel of family, friends and colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Jerry Jarbeaux Weidenbach and their daughter Susan. He is survived by son Thomas and son James and his wife Lisa and their children Susan and Stephen. His family is especially appreciative of the care given him by the Gilbert Residence in Ypsilanti. Arrangements are private.
