Born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, on September 12, 1951, Lynne was the daughter of the late Neil O'Day and Cynthia Navarro. After graduating from high school, she pursued higher education in Michigan before earning her degree in Biology from the University of Arizona. Following her graduation, Lynne embarked on an extraordinary adventure, excelling in the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) program, where she developed mountaineering skills and learned how to live off the land,
Upon returning to Michigan, Lynne met Kenneth Phelps at a party, an encounter that would change her life forever. Kenneth walked her to her car that evening, and as fate would have it, the two became inseparable. Their relationship blossomed, and they were married on June 16, 1986, after a year dating. Together, Lynne and Kenneth shared a wonderful life full of adventure, laughter, and love. In 1987, they welcomed their son, Ryan, who became the center of their world.
As a family, Lynne, Kenneth, and Ryan were often on the move, exploring new destinations and creating lasting memories. Whether attending air shows across the country, camping in the great outdoors, or spending time at their beloved family cottage on Lake Huron, they cherished their time together. Lynne found peace in the natural world, hiking through the woods and relaxing on the beach, always with her family by her side.
Lynne was passionate about archery and competed in tournaments across the United States. She was proud to win multiple awards, including a Gold Medal at the 2011 Senior Archery Olympics in Houston, Texas which set a new National Senior Olympics record.
Lynne also had a special love for dogs, cats, and horses. While in school, Lynne and her horse, Wolfer, participated in several Hunter-Jumper competitions.
A natural caregiver, Lynne dedicated much of her professional life to helping others. She served as an ambulance driver for the Detroit Ambulance Company and worked as a paramedic at Oakwood Hospital. Later, she found her home at the University of Michigan's Emergency Room, where she spent many years as a paramedic and technician before retiring.
At home, Lynne was known for her love of classic Western films, her fondness for Johnny Cash, and her singing in the car to Love Shack by the B-52s.
Lynne is survived by her devoted son, Ryan Phelps of Ypsilanti, who was both her pride and joy and her loving caregiver in her final years. She is also survived by her siblings, Trent and Terry Navarro. Lynne was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Phelps, who passed on November 15, 2017.
A celebration of life for both Lynne and Kenneth will be held at a later date.
The Muehlig Funeral Chapel is privileged to serve the Phelps family during this difficult time.
