It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of our mother’s passing, Marianne Elizabeth Jossens. She passed after a courageous and determined battle against blood cancer on March 8th, 2026 in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan Medical Center. She was surrounded by loving friends and family until the end.
Marianne was born to Frieda and Anthony Jossens on May 11, 1957 in Detroit, Michigan. She grew up in Grosse Pointe Woods where she was involved in many activities. Marianne attended Michigan State University, graduating with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1981. She worked as a veterinarian in Grand Rapids, including time at the John Ball Zoo. In 1990 Marianne and her family moved to Traverse City where she eventually found her home at Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital. “Dr. J” was a skilled and beloved surgeon, and friend of all animals. From snakes to birds to cats and dogs, she treasured and cared for all creatures big and small.
Marianne was a Black Belt in Kenpo and an avid kayaker. She circumnavigated Isle Royale on several occasions and frequently went on multi-day expeditions to Great Lakes locations such as the Apostle Islands. Marianne found peace in her large koi fish pond and found satisfaction completing many projects beautifying her home and garden.
Marianne is survived by her brother Lawrence, three children Steven, Thomas, and Danielle, and three grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St, Traverse City, MI 49684 on Saturday, June 20th, 2026 at 11am. An open house will follow after the service. More details will be provided at that time.
