January 26, 1924 – January 27, 2014
Mrs. Marjorie C. Green departed this life in the early morning hours of Monday, January 27, 2014 at the Evangelical Home of Saline, in Saline, Michigan. After 90 years including a twenty year battle with dementia and other physical changes and challenges, Mrs. Green accepted God’s call to come home. She was born on January 26, 1924, the daughter of Robert Harrison and Ada Patrick Claiborne of Danville, Virginia. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, her brother, Sterling H. Claiborne and her sister, Mattie Wilmoth C. Butler.
Marjorie Green graduated from Danville High School in 1940 at the age of 16. She pursued her education and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics in 1944 from Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia. Marjorie was also a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. On June 17, 1945, she married Emmett L. Green in Danville, Virginia. From this union, they have four daughters, affectionately referred to as the “4 Green girls.” They are Cynthia Poindexter, “daughter no 1”, Paula Mitchell-Monroe, “daughter no 2”, Alene Cannaday, “daughter no 3” and Darylin Green, “daughter no 4.”
Marjorie was a mathematics teacher for one year in the Danville, Virginia Public Schools from 1944-1945. She also taught math for one-half year in the Roanoke, Virginia Public Schools from January 1966-June 1966. In September 1966, Marjorie, her husband and family moved here to Ann Arbor. Having a thirst for learning and self improvement, in 1971 she traveled to Gettysburg, Virginia for additional math studies at Gettysburg College and subsequently received a Masters Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1973. Marjorie taught Math at Slauson Intermediate School for twenty years and retired from the Ann Arbor Public Schools in 1988.
Marjorie accepted Christ at a young age at Calvary Baptist Church in Danville, Virginia. She later became “First Lady” during those times when her husband pastored at churches in Westerly, Rhode Island; Lexington, Virginia; Charlottesville, Virginia; Roanoke, Virginia and here at Second Baptist Church. She attended church here regularly, always sitting in the second pew. Marjorie always took notes on the message and she read her Bible each night faithfully. She modestly stood by her husband’s side and complimented his Ministry, in personal and private ways.
As an elegant woman with class and style, she loved to talk with people and she always made others smile. She was smart, gentle, sweet and sometimes a bit shy. She loved poetry, the color “yellow”, cross word puzzles, needle point, aerobics, tabloid magazines and collecting and using store coupons. She always put God and her family first. Marjorie was a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
As a wife and mother, Marjorie was an excellent cook, preparing balanced meals and making sure that Jell-O was always a “side dish.” Although she may have thrown out a cake or two “that did not rise”; yet the ones that did rise, were yummy, especially with ice cream. She is also remembered for her delicious chocolate and lemon meringue pies she always made for the family, especially for the holidays. Marjorie had a special “knack” for the “art of presentation” as all of her home table place settings and arrangements were beautiful, understated and tasteful. She always made you feel welcomed and comfortable in her home.
Marjorie C. Green leaves to mourn, her loving and devoted husband of 68 years, Rev. Dr. Emmett L. Green and her four daughters. Marjorie also leaves to cherish her memory, seven grandchildren, six great-grand children and a host of other relatives and friends. A special acknowledgement and appreciation is extended to her daughter Darylin Green. As a caregiver and devoted daughter, Darylin dedicated herself to mom’s needs, in spite of the hour of the day or night or other circumstances or challenges. She worked tirelessly to ensure mom received quality care, love, and attention as mom struggled with failing health over the years. We know Marjorie is in a better place with God. We miss her dearly and she will always remain in our hearts forever.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, 850 Red Oak, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48103. Flowers should be sent to the church.
