Mark graduated with a degree in Rail Transportation Engineering from the Kharkiv Railroad Engineering Institute in 1949, after which he moved to Petropavlovsk, Kazakhstan. It was there he met Galina Lozovsky on the street while walking with a friend. On their first date they met to go for a walk in town - Mark brought Galina chocolates that she ate all at once, and he knew right in that moment that she was the one.
Mark and Galina married in 1955 and moved to Moscow, where they raised two daughters, Natalia and Alla. Mark was a soft-spoken man who put his family above all else—he loved to cook for them, often finding it the clearest way to express his love. His potato fries, kolbasa, and many cakes were family favorites, first of Galina and Natalia and Alla, then his sons-in-law Leonid and Leon, and later his grandchildren Dina, Victor, and Sonja.
Mark and Galina came to America in 1993, a serious journey to make in their 60s, but one that Mark knew for sure was in the best interests of the wider family. After a number of years in Colorado, he and Galina settled in Ann Arbor near Alla, Leon, and Sonja. It was there that he lived out the final 18 years of his life as a happy, healthy husband, father, and grandfather—cooking, fussing, and taking a great interest in the floorplans of any new apartments one of his grandchildren happened to move into.
A private funeral took place on February 7 and Mark was laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is survived by his aforementioned wife, daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. May his memory be a blessing.
