

Mary Louise Dickie, 72, passed away July 14th at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor after a three-year battle with Leukemia. Mary Lou was a beautiful spouse, wonderful mother, grandma, teacher and selfless loving beautiful woman. Mary Lou was born in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin on August 13, 1944, the first daughter of Elmer and Margaret Wood. She spent her early years in Wisconsin, and in 1952 moved to St. Joseph Michigan where she attended St. Joseph Catholic schools graduating in 1962.
Mary Lou attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967. She went on to earn a Masters of Education degree from the University of Southern California in 1971, and later an elementary school teaching certificate from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. On September 9, 1967 Mary Lou married Jon Dickie, an Air Force 2nd Lt. They were married nearly 50 years residing in Germany, and the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area.
Mary Lou taught first and second grade at Carpenter School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for many years, where she enhanced the lives of hundreds of youngsters. Teaching was her passion, followed closely by gardening where she grew beautiful flowers from a handful of seeds.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Jon, two daughters, Heather (Brian) Burdette of Kingwood, Texas, and Caroline (Brandon) Downer of North Bergen, New Jersey; two sisters, Sally Corff of St. Joseph, Michigan, and Margaret ‘Peggy’ (Rick) Jersey of Petoskey, Michigan, and four grandchildren, Alex and Andrew Burdette of Kingwood, Texas and Owen and Elle Downer of North Bergen, New Jersey. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her brother William Wood and parents Elmer and Margaret Wood.
A celebration of Mary Lou’s life will take place at her Ypsilanti home on Saturday July 22nd from 2:00-7:00. Memorial contributions in Mary Lou’s name may be made to the C.S, Mott Children’s and Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Arrangements under the direction of Muehlig Funeral Chapel, Ann Arbor, MI.
