Neal L. Laurance
August 19, 1932 – October 28, 2019
Neal Louis Laurance, of Ann Arbor, passed away 28 October 2019 surrounded by his family. He was 87.
Born 19 August 1932 in Watertown, Minnesota, he was the son of David J. and Elizabeth R. (Otto) Laurance.
Neal married Anne R. Waldmann of Brainerd, Minnesota, on 24 August 1953.
Neal was educated at Marquette University and the University of Illinois, where he received a PhD in physics in 1959.
Neal worked in Scientific Research at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan, retiring in 1997. Neal and his family have been members of St. Mary’s Student Parish since moving to Ann Arbor in 1970. An active musician throughout his life, Neal offered his talents freely as pianist and organist.
He was a long time volunteer with the chaplain’s office at the University of Michigan Hospitals, where he took pride in sporting his collection of ties from art museums.
Neal is survived by his wife, Anne R. Laurance; their four4 children,: Jeanne Horvath and husband Lawrence, David Laurance and wife Nancy Lewis, Rita Laurance, and Emily Laurance and husband Kevin McLaughlin; three grandchildren Peter Laurance and wife Melissa, Jennifer Lewis, and Elaine Horvath and fiancé Noel Longoria; four great grandchildren Charles and Dexter Laurance, and Veronica and Vivienne Longoria; as well as six siblings, Dean Laurance, John Laurance S.J., Jane Laurance and husband David Nelson, Joan Guggemos and husband Giles, Margaret Hake and husband Robert, and Marian Ramirez and husband Ernesto, sister-in-law Mary Meyer and husband Don, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 11:00 am at Saint Mary Student Parish with Father Dennis Dillon, S. J. officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00-6:30pm at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel, as well as on Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of the service. A reception will immediately follow the service.
In honor of Neal, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Student Parish or Food Gatherers of Ann Arbor.
