

Norman Julius Horning, age 93, left this earth to join our Heavenly Father on October 24th, 2016, after an unexpected health condition. Norman was born on August 16, 1923, in Lodi Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan and married Gena Irene Inman on July 16, 1949, after meeting while taking accordion lessons from Eugen E. Schumann at Schumann Accordian Studios in Ann Arbor. He was preceded in death by his wife Gena in January 2010, his sister Doris (Stevenson) Bowling in April 2016, mother Martha (Furthmueller), and father Frederick Horning. He is survived by his youngest sister, Lenora LaRoe of Carleton, Michigan, daughter Barbara Shannon (SSG/E-6, U.S Army Retired), granddaughters Jamyne (Stewart) Rivera and Dawn Shannon, and great-granddaughter Selena Rivera, all of Lawrenceville, Georgia, son David Horning, grandsons Kevin and Russell Horning, all of Snellville, Georgia, and oldest grandson Raymond Horning who is currently on active duty as a Second Lieutenant with the U.S. Marines in Okinawa, Japan, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Norman was a devout Christian of the Lutheran faith and an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Norman served honorably in the United States Army during World War II, participated in the Battle of Normandy with the 4th U.S. Army Infantry Division, and was subsequently wounded during the Battle of the Hedgerows, receiving the Purple Heart and two battle stars for his actions and bravery. Norman worked in auto parts sales for 25 years and for Sarns 3M Health Care, retiring in 1988. Norman was instrumental in the revitalization of the Michigan Theater’s Barton organ in Ann Arbor and was also involved with several theater pipe organ groups: the Detroit Theater Organ Society (DTOS), the Motor City Theater Organ Society at the Redford Theater, and the American Theater Organ Society. He was also a member of a World War II Veteran’s group, a widow’s group, and the Buick Club of America, as he was a very dedicated Buick man! Norman enjoyed helping people, traveling to Arizona in his Airstream trailer, relaxing at Murray Lake in Ann Arbor, attending band and organ concerts, and spending time with family and friends. In accordance with Norman’s wishes, there will be no visitation and no service. Cremation has taken place. A private graveside burial for family will be at Washtenong Memorial Park at a future date.
