In memory of Sharlyn (“Sherry”) Wheeler – adored wife of Jim, cherished mother of Greg (Kristen) and Andrea (Frank), and beloved grandmother of Jaeger and Eli. Sherry was born to Chuck and Dottie Johnson on 11/23/44 while her father served in World War II. She attended private Catholic school followed by nursing school where she became a Licensed Practical Nurse. Sherry worked at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, serving in the burn unit and pediatrics. She married her lifelong partner, Jim, on 6/02/67 and the couple raised two children.
Sherry’s compassionate nature was evident not only in nursing, but in all her interactions. She treated others kindly and lovingly, encouraging grace for all. As soft as she was, she was strong, too, keeping hardship to herself and focusing attention on others.
Sherry was fearless and adventurous, whether it was swimming with dolphins, riding every attraction at Disney, or hopping on the back of a motorcycle. She enjoyed vacationing with family and was involved in showing horses for years as a member of the Michigan Appaloosa Horse Association. Sherry loved books and took every opportunity to read, getting out a paperback at railroad crossings rather than complaining of a train slowing her down. She was fond of science fiction and fantasy – sharing an active interest in the same genre of books and movies as her grandsons. Her knowledge and wisdom acquiring her the nickname “Grandma Yoda.”
Sherry was artistic and creative – making paintings of landscapes, houses, and people she loved. She enjoyed drafting blueprints, designing kitchens, and styling interiors. Sherry obtained a Residential Builders License and, together with her husband, built and renovated houses before “flipping” was even a thing. She liked shopping and decorating with her daughter. One of Sherry’s last wishes was to see the newly purchased home and property of her son and daughter-in-law after their recent move to Michigan from out of state. Sherry’s other hope was for one more family cookout where she’d typically signal it was time to go home with a “singing yawn.”
Finally, Sherry was a loyal Christian – appealing to anyone interested to put trust in God and pray for strength, but not for a desired outcome which might be in conflict with God’s ultimate plan. This advice has been of benefit to those she loved as we’re certain she is comfortable and pain free now. Sherry will continue to support and protect her family and loved ones from heaven, much like the guardian angel we viewed her as here on Earth.
