"From his cradle to his grave a man never does a single thing which has any first and foremost object but one, to secure peace of mind, spiritual comfort, for himself." Mark Twain Vaughn Starr Berry, 89, formerly of Ann Arbor, MI, died December 12, 2011. Vaughn was a Michigander from cradle to grave, with the exception of his service on a B-24 bomber over England during WWII. After the war, Vaughn worked for King Seeley Corporation which was later acquired by Chrysler Corporation. After retirement, he was employed by Balance Technology. An avid bowler, Vaughn was dedicated in his practice and could often be found at his favorite bowling alley perfecting his roll and bending an ear or two - that was just how he rolled. Among his more proud bowling memories was when he went 'All the way' - during league play in 1989, scoring a perfect 300. Vaughn shared his bowling secrets with neophyte bowlers at Colonial Lanes and certainly passed on his love of the game to subsequent generations. Vaughn will be remembered for his active lifestyle, maintaining a rigorous exercise and fitness regime. He could always be counted on to deliver a hearty greeting and enjoyed his interactions with friends at Liberty Athletic Club (Ann Arbor). As a father, Vaughn successfully wrangled the kinetic energy of his two young sons, Duane and David, from time to time for a game of catch or a fishing excursion and took some of the most adorable photos of his growing boys. Eventually, he watched them grow and graduate high school, following along with their sports interest in baseball and basketball. As they earned their undergraduate degrees, then master's degrees and finally Ph.Ds, Vaughn took quiet pride in his sons' achievements. Vaughn was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Iva Fern (Roskey) Berry and his son, David Allen Berry. He was also predeceased by his brother, Allen, numerous brothers and sisters in law, Helen (Vern) Williamson, Gladys (Ron) Penpraze, Dorothy (Fritz) Schimmelpfenig, Norma (Harlan) Nichol and Melvin, Stanley and Robert Roskey. He is survived by his son, Duane F. (Sandra) Berry and his daughter in law David-deceased (Lana) Berry; his sisters in law Marie (Robert) Sleda and Evelyn Cramer, numerous nieces and nephews and three granddogs, Tashi, Charlie and Penny. A memorial luncheon in celebration of Vaughn's life will be held for family and friends on Sunday, December 18, 2011 from 11:00 to 2:00 at Weber's Inn, 3050 Jackson Road, Ann Arbor, MI, 48103.
