Vera Jean Stallworth Gates peacefully departed this life during the early morning hours of December 9, 2018. Born on September 26, 1939, in Evergreen, Alabama, Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Cleve and Carrie Stallworth, and her husband, Mark Campbell Gates.
A dedicated and active teacher in the Ann Arbor Public Schools, Vera received her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama, and her Master’s degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University. She taught at both Dicken and Allen Schools. Following her retirement from the school system in 2012, she continued to substitute in elementary schools throughout the district. Vera enjoyed reading and spending time with her family.
Vera leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Christopher and Marcus, her grandchildren, two sisters, her brother-in-law, Larry (Joyce) Gates, her sister-in-law, Jacqueline (Tony) Foster, her dear niece, Vickie (Ronnie) Malcolm, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held for Vera on Friday, December 14, at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, with the family hour at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Patricia Byrd, Associate Minister at Second Baptist Church, Ann Arbor, officiating.
