Suddenly, on April 6, 2018, Hyatt Alpheus Duke, Jr. “Al” of Annapolis, MD passed away. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Marlene Emma (nee Helmer); devoted children, Terry Heidler (Mickey), Cindy Monaghan (Mike) and Laurie Duke (Mark); cherished grandchildren (who affectionately referred to him as “GP”) Jimmy Bracken, Joe Lombardo, Dani Bottcher (Steven) and Michael Monaghan; and 2 great granddaughters, Madison and Brooklyn. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Chip in 1987.
Al graduated from City College and Towson University. After receiving his degree, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and went to OCS at Quantico. Al’s skills were in flying helicopters and fighter jets. He received honorable discharge in 1967 after serving 10 years. At the time of his discharge he was the rank of Captain. He was extremely proud of his service as a pilot and captain in the Marines, as he would always say, “Once a Marine, Always a Marine”.
He then went into sales and marketing and worked for IBM, Towson University and real estate.
Al loved family, traveling, socializing, boating, animals and the USMC. He was always the life of the party and exuded happiness wherever he went. He was a fantastic storyteller of his life experiences.
The family will receive friends at John M. Taylor Funeral Home at 147 Duke of Gloucester Street on Thursday, April 12 from 4-7 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St John Neumann Church, 620 Bestgate Road in Annapolis at 10:30 am on April 13, 2018.
Interment will be at Arlington Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA of Annapolis (a no-kill shelter) or Guide Dogs for the Blind because of his special love for animals.
