Dr. Alan Giles Harquail Jr. peacefully passed away on October 12, 2023 at the age of 94. He was born in 1928 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Alan Harquail Sr. and Adelaide Wren. He graduated from Scarsdale High School class of 1946 and Dartmouth College in 1950 and was a member of Sigma Chi literary fraternity. He received his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1954 and completed his surgical residency in Boston City Hospital. He was a Lieutenant in the US Navy inducted in Annapolis, MD, then stationed in Newport, RI as a Navy dentist and served on a ship in the Mediterranean during part of the Korean War. He married Vivian Small, also from Scarsdale, NY in 1954 and they were life companions and co-captains in everything they did together. While in Newport, he became an early member of the Newport Ski Club and enjoyed skiing in Vermont for many years with his family. After serving in the Navy, he moved to Severna Park, MD and established a successful Oral Surgery practice (Harquail, Kalivoda and Looney, DDS). He was an astute businessman by building his own professional office buildings in Pasadena, MD, expanding his practice to Annapolis and investing in the stock market. He was the first fully trained (board certified) oral surgeon on the staff of the Anne Arundel General and North Arundel Hospitals and went on to serve as Chief of Oral Surgeons for many years. He was a member of the Maryland Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Mid-Atlantic Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
In the 1960’s, he bought his first sailboat, a Herreshoff 23, and joined the Annapolis Yacht Club to become an avid sailboat racer and cruiser which he enthusiastically pursued throughout his lifetime. He was a member of the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake, Cruising Club of America, Ocean Cruising Club, and Wianno Yacht Club. He loved ocean racing and participated in the Annapolis to Newport (A2N) and Newport to Bermuda races for over 30+ years as either crew, watch captain with other yachts or captain of his own yacht. In the A2N race, he placed in the top 3 of his class at least 5 times and placed 3rd as captain of his own Gulfstar 40 in the Newport to Bermuda race. He and his family raced in countless CBYRA sanctioned events on the Chesapeake Bay always in pursuit of the notorious highpoint award which he did achieve along with accumulating numerous trophies. He transitioned fully to cruising when he retired in 1991 and then set off on a 20-year sailing adventure, which included extensive cruising on the Chesapeake Bay, all along the east coast from Florida to Maine as well as Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Mexican Yucatan, Guatemala, Belize, and The Bahamas. He traveled around the world by chartering with different sailing clubs or fellow sailing friends to places like Norway, New Zealand, Croatia, Greek Islands, and England. He was a sailing, skiing, and tennis enthusiast for over 60 years. He skied throughout his life, all over New England, Western and Canadian Rockies, and European Alps with family and friends. He took his last ski runs at Discovery Mountain in Montana at age 87. Retirement summers were spent sailing in New England and winters were spent skiing mostly in Park City, UT. He was a devout catholic and parishioner of St. John’s the Evangelist Catholic Church of Severna Park and then St. Mary's Catholic Church of Annapolis. He loved singing, which started in his college years, and continued during retirement by singing with the Arundel Vocal Arts Society (AVAS) for many choral Christmas time local performances. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed discussing current events, owning and driving sport cars, and played tennis wherever possible at home or while travelling.
Alan was a loving and supportive son, husband, father and grandfather to his family. He is survived by his wife Vivian Harquail of 68 years, his sister Jeanne Madlen, and four children: Alden Harquail (Amparo), Steve Harquail (Kristin), Kim Todd (Jeff), and Melanie Matelich (Lewis) and seven grandchildren: Natalie Harquail, Lucas Matelich, Cassie Todd, Wren Matelich, Samuel Harquail, Shelby Todd, and Augustus Harquail.
