Alice Murray Randall

Alice Murray Randall passed away March 22, 2023. Her three children survive her: Emily Randall Fjeld, Anne Murray Randall and John Murray Randall. She had three grandchildren, Olaf, Bailey and Allyson and two great grandchildren. Alice was born in Baltimore in 1928 to Clapham and Pauline Thelma Murray, but as a very young girl, her family moved to Owensville, Anne Arundel County. The old family farm, “Woodstock” in Owensville, the days playing with her sister Priscilla and brother Clapham, Christ Church, and the many friends and relatives living in the West River area formed a lasting impression that she would hold dear all of her life. After finishing high school, Alice moved back to Baltimore where she met her husband, John LeMoyne Randall (1924-2005) and married in February of 1949. The couple moved to the Annapolis area in 1955, and they would remain here the rest of their lives.

When Alice’s three children were all in school, she began to work part-time for the Maryland Historical Trust. Later, she worked for Historic Annapolis during the fundraising and early stages of restoring the Paca House and gardens. Towards the end of her career, she worked at the Courthouse in Annapolis. Once retired, she began to go through and organize old family papers, and this work motivated her to transcribe the letters (1782-1840) between Harriet Woodward Murray of “Woodstock” and her friend Catharine Nicholson Few. In 2014, she published these letters, Lifelong Friends The Letters of Harriet Woodward Murray & Catharine Nicholson Few.

Alice enjoyed a varied social life and activities over the years. She was always motivated to attend exercise classes, take walks, and in her early years sail and play tennis. She took advantage of what the Annapolis area had to offer, and she found great pleasure in these activities even in the last years of her life. Alice Murray Randall will be buried in the family plot at Christ Church in Owensville.
