

Amy Diane Geissinger, Colonel Retired United States Army, was originally from Pennsylvania. She was commissioned in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps in 1954 and served for 24 years. Col. Geissinger’s total nursing experience of 31 years had an emphasis in public health. She attained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Michigan. She also did postgraduate research at Walter Reed Army Institute and George Washington University. Her career accomplishments were impressive. She was an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing as part of the Walter Reed Army Institute Nursing program and then became a Senior Infection Control Officer. Later she became the Assistant Chief of the Department of Nursing at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. She also served as a consultant to the Army Surgeon General for community health nursing and was responsible for helping develop Army policy in Preventive Medicine. She served in Korea, Germany and throughout the United States. She was selected by the American Public Health Association as part of a group of ten doctors and ten nurses to represent the U.S. in a State Department exchange program with China. For her service to our country, Col. Geissinger received the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and an “A” prefix awarded for excellence in her Nursing Specialty by the Army Surgeon General. She is survived by her nephews, John W. Geissinger and his wife Anne, of Darien, CT, Dr. Brent W. Geissinger M.D. and his wife Kim of Virginia Beach, VA and her niece Karin and her husband Steve Malkowski of Dover DE. In addition, she is survived by her great nieces and nephews, John, Peter, Emilie, Kristin, Drew, Kyle, Jack, and Ella and her sister-in-law Barbara G. Stephens of Dover, DE. cousins, Nancy Adams, Susan Johnson and Aunt, Sally Johnson. She was pre-deceased by her brother Dr. John B. Geissinger M.D. and her parents Dr. John B. Geissinger and Amy F. Geissinger. Lt. Colonel Mary G. Johancen her best friend, and Colonel Geissinger lived together in retirement in Annapolis for over 20 years. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Nov 4th, 10:30 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401. Burial with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
