

Bessie Elvira Horton Peret was born on May 17, 1938 in Kowloon, China to Charles Franklin Horton and Agnes Ignacio Horton. She came to the United States at the age of 8 years old and settled with the family in Annapolis, Maryland. She attended school and graduated from Annapolis High School, where she was a multi-sport athlete and majorette. She was a physical education teacher at Annapolis High School, where she met the love of her life the late Richard “Dick” Peret. For many years Bessie worked at Farmers National Bank before returning to working in the Annapolis school system.
Bessie and Dick spent 63 years together enjoying life, family and friends in their home in Eastport. They spent their early retirement years travelling the east coast in their RV. They enjoyed many lasting friendships and memories in Okeechobee, Florida and Myrtle Beach. Bessie was a lifelong member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Club of Annapolis and the Ladies of the Elks Lodge 622.
Bessie is survived by her children: Rick and wife Tiffin Bumpass, daughter Lauren and husband Nathan Berger and granddaughters Hailey, Kendall and Sydney. She is also survived by her sister Betty Meekins.
A celebration of life will be held at the Fleet Reserve Club of Annapolis on July 13th at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA of Annapolis.
