Beverley “Beckie” Stewart Creighton (Collison) passed away on May 17, 2024, in Annapolis, MD, at the age of 93 with family by her side. Beckie was born on July 16, 1930, in Annapolis to Sarah and Walter Collison, whose families had lived in the Chesapeake Bay region for many generations.
Beckie grew up on Weems Creek, part of the Chesapeake Bay and often spoke warmly of childhood adventures ice skating or swimming in the creek. She would share stories of life and adventure like when one of their horses would only escape when there were horse races happening at Parole Racetrack. It was always a mystery how he knew races were in town miles away. During World War II, she was invited to become an open water lifeguard and reflected on how that was not typically a job done by women. Lifeguarding was just one example of how she supported her country and military during the war. At the age of 16, Beckie graduated from Annapolis High School and attended Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore to expand her already creative mind and innate eye for color.
Beckie, warmly known by family as “Goose,” enjoyed life, experiencing new things and never wanted to slow down except maybe to smell some flowers or watch deer in her backyard. With her quick wit and humor, she easily made a positive impression on friends and strangers everywhere she went leaving behind smiles and laughter. She was a gracious host who delighted in holding elaborate dinners and family gatherings. Beckie was active socially, frequently volunteering in the community, especially turning her love of Maryland and her connection to its history into years of volunteer work for the Captain Avery Museum in Shady Side, Maryland. She enjoyed the outdoors and spent summers camping on North Lake in New Brunswick, Canada with her husband, Liles “Bub” Creighton, family and friends.
Beckie was preceded in death by her husband, Bub, with whom she will be laid to rest at the United States Naval Academy. She is survived by her two children, Marie Stewart Pomeroy (Scott) and David Collison Stewart (Maureen), grandchildren Ann Marie Hoyt (Justin) and Arley Ann Windle (Chris), stepchildren Catherine Creighton Martin (Tony) and Kim Creighton Simons (Alex), and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, family and friends are asked to make donations to the Captain Avery Museum in Shady Side (https://captainaverymuseum.org).
