- composer Bart Howard (Fly me to the Moon)
Born on February 5th, 1942, Bobbie E. Dowell passed peacefully at home on the morning of August 13, 2020. During her last months she was surrounded by her surviving loved ones: daughter Rachel Andrea Dowell Dennehy, son-in-law Michael Dennehy, granddaughter Francesca Dennehy, son Jason Dowell, daughter-in-law Rina Dowell, granddaughters Sarah and Grace Dowell, partner Don Brophy, his daughter Amanda Brophy and support from afar, son Michael Brophy. Bobbie, the oldest of nine siblings, is also survived by her brothers Robert Dale Vaughn and Jerry Vaughn and her sister Linda Vaughn.
Bobbie was a uniquely perfect mix of southern charm and East Coast style. She was born in Eupora, Mississippi and then moved to Houston, Texas. In those early years, Bobbie had a career as a child performer/singer starting at the tender age of five, singing “You are my Sunshine” on local Mississippi radio. Under the guidance of her father, Earl Vaughn, her family group, The Vaughn Singers, made it to the famed Louisiana Hayride stage. In the spotlight from such a young age, her ability to carry herself with poise and grace carried through her whole life. For Bobbie, singing and music were some of her greatest gifts and some of her greatest joys through to the end. Many of us were blessed to get to share in song and dance with her.
In her early adult life, as a loving and devoted mother and wife, Bobbie managed a remarkable feat of over 18 family moves across the U.S. She lived and made beautiful homes in places such as Detroit, Miami, and Summit, New Jersey. During this time, she also worked as an assistant teacher and office manager and received a residential design certification from the New York School of Interior Design in Manhattan. Drawing upon all of her knowledge acquired from so many residential moves combined with her natural skills for interior design, she started and ran her own businesses, Relocation Decoration and Bobbie Dowell Design, for over 20 years.
In the mid 1990’s, Bobbie settled in Annapolis, Maryland and found it quite humorous that it wasn’t until her sixth decade that she had lived somewhere more than seven years! Making friends and true connections has been Bobbie’s way all along. She had an inner light that would shine and if you knew her, you would be warmed by its radiant glow. Those that have been touched by her friendship, generosity, and positive outlook are countless. All who have loved her will hold close to their hearts her exquisite flair, her grace in facing life’s ups and downs, and her unflinching care for them. From Mississippi to Annapolis, we will never forget her joyous laugh - it had an uplifting tone and a comforting tune. Her smiling laugh was her life’s song.
