Bruce Alan Breiding, 93, of Annapolis, Maryland passed away November 11, 2025. He was born in Chicago, Illinois to the late Jacob Edward Breiding and the late Teresa Ade Breiding. He is survived by his wife, Hope B. Breiding, and daughter, Hope B. Flora (Josh) and grandson, Asher Alan Flora.
Bruce grew up in Chicago and graduated from DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana. After serving in the Army at White Sands Proving Grounds, now White Sands Missile Range, he returned to Chicago where he began his career with IBM. Subequently, IBM transferred him to Washington, D.C. where he worked until his retirement.
In Washington, with its easy proximity to the Chesapeake Bay, Bruce’s interest in competitive racing developed into a passion which would continue for the remainder of his life. His love was one-design racing. It firstly was manifested in the active Annapolis Alberg 30 fleet and expanded to the Soling class and then to the J30 racing fleet. He was a long time participant in the Wednesday Night Racing Series.
The family’s move from Washington, D. C. to Annapolis allowed Bruce to continue his year-long racing schedule but to also keep sailing with his reliable though aging Alberg 30, Phantom.
Bruce was also an excellent skier. And he shared his love of the mountains of Colorado with Hope and Hopie who are both committed to nurturing Bruce’s love for sailing and skiing in Bruce’s beloved grandson, Asher Alan Flora.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 5, 2025, at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, Annapolis, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Severn Sailing Association, 311 First Street, Annapolis, Maryland 21403.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Gilchrist Hospice and Chesapeake Caregivers for care they so gently and professionally provided.
