The Sugg and Demorest Families mourn the loss of Christina Demorest-Sugg, 54, on July 18, 2016. Born September 28, 1961, She grew up in Downtown Annapolis, Maryland. She attended St. Mary’s College of Maryland and earned her B.A. in Art in 1986. She did graduate study in ceramics and printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University and Southern Illinois University but her graduate studies were interrupted by a sudden marriage proposal on a weekend trip to Memphis! The further consequences took her to California and back to Maryland and resulted in two beautiful children and 23 years of mutual devotion with her spouse, Alfred Hilyer Sugg. Christina had a love of art and nature evident from childhood. Her parents, Charlie and Colly, took her to the Western Maryland woods, the English countryside, the coast of Italy, the South Dakota prairie and Michigan farmland. She grew up crabbing in Spa Creek, and enchanted by plants from woodland natives to garden flowers. In adulthood, Christina loved tidewater Maryland. She participated in oyster culture and propagated native plants; a nurturer of living things from human to mollusk to spring ephemeral! She worked at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, MICA, Bittersweet and Homewood Nurseries, as well as various local garden centers. Christina volunteered with the Chesapeake Natives and was a member of the Muddy Creek Artists Guild. She also established a small business, Evolution Now-File Mile Road, with her sister, Rebecca, for which she designed textiles and quilts that were featured at artisan venues and Whole Foods Market. A longtime resident of Shady Side, Maryland, she enjoyed sailing, spending time in her garden and cooking for family and friends. Those who knew and loved her remember her gentle kindness, the high value she placed on beauty and creativity, and her love of ripe summer tomatoes. Christina is survived by Husband Alfred Hilyer Sugg, Children Christina Hilyer Sugg and Alfred Gannon Sugg, Sister Rebecca Dagny Demorest, aunts, uncles and cousins. A private memorial service will be held.
