He was born on April 24, 1951, in Charleston, South Carolina, to Ralph and Mary Lou Murphy.
He was born into a military family and spent his childhood traveling and moving with the Navy. He graduated from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, with degrees in history and english.
He worked as a stock trader with Ferris & Company in Washington, DC, and later as a programmer with the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, Maryland.
He loved music and films, and had a vast knowledge of both. He was a Washington Nationals and Washington Team fan. He especially loved time with family and his many nieces and nephews. In recent years he lived at the Annapolitan Assisted Living Facility and received the loving support of fellow residents and staff there.
He is survived by his sister Patty (and Ron) Scheible, his brother John (and Jeanette) Murphy, his brother in law Roger Abram, nieces and nephews - Sarah Nicholas, Adam Chudy-Scheible, Erin Abram, Caitlin Gregg, Matthew Murphy, Mark Murphy, Chris Scheible, Megan Murphy, great nieces and nephews Aiden, Connor, Brynn and Aubrey Gregg, and Ellis Abram.
He was preceded in death by his father, Rear Admiral Ralph Murphy, his mother, Mary Lou Thaney Murphy, and his sister, Sheila Abram.
