

Daniel M. Spadone, was born October 12th, 1925 in Newark, N.J. to the late Sam and Mary LaRocca Spadone. He earned degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Fairleigh Dickinson University. During World War II, he served in the Navy. After the war, his engineering career involved three different disciplines. He worked at Bendix and ITT in aerospace until 1965 where he was involved with flight control systems for high speed aircraft such as the B-58 Hustler Bomber and the 465L Command and Control System for the Strategic Air Command. He moved to Annapolis, Maryland from Erskine Lake, Ringwood, New Jersey to join the Navy Deep Submergence Systems Program (DSSP), tasked with developing small submersibles to explore the oceans and recover objects from depths to 20,000 feet; a small deep submergence rescue vehicle for rescuing people from distressed fleet submarines; and the capability to live in and do useful work in the ocean for extended periods of time (Example: Sea Lab at a depth of 600 ft. with some people remaining there for 30 days). Subsequently, he became a Technical Director, Deputy and then Program Manager at the Naval Sea Systems Command responsible for the Virginia Class Nuclear Cruisers and the reactivation of the Iowa Class Battleships. He enjoyed many things, including, sailing, race management for sailing events, running, reading, travelling, cooking, gardening, ham radio and his many friends at the Annapolis Yacht Club where he was a member. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church since 1965 and a previous member of the Annapolis Striders, the Fleet Reserve Club and the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary “Gerte” Spadone, his brother Anthony and sisters Marie and Henrietta. Survivors include his children Charles, Marian and Daniel, his grandchildren Rainbow and Kathryn, great grandchildren Olivia Hope and Sebastian and his brother Nicholas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday September 1, 2016 at 9 AM St. John Neumann Catholic Church 620 N. Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD. Burial to follow at Crownsville Maryland State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Mary’s High School designated for scholarship.
