Elizabeth Jourdan Jones Macfie

Elizabeth Jourdan Jones Macfie, 90, died peacefully on September 13, 2026 in Gambrills, MD. Jourdan was born on July 11, 1936 in Columbia, SC. Her family moved to Greenville, SC in 1940. She was a communicant at Christ Church Episcopal for the remainder of her life.

Jourdan graduated from Greenville High School, attended Agnes Scott College, and graduated from Furman University. She was certified as a teacher of English, speech, and drama. She taught at Christ Church Episcopal School and Greer High School. After leaving teaching, Jourdan worked for nearly 30 years as the Greenville fashion consultant and sales representative for the Carlisle Collection of designer clothing.

Jourdan was active in the Greenville Little Theatre (now Greenville Theatre), both as an actress and, later, as a member of the board. She won the Little Theatre’s best actress awards for her roles as Maria in the Sound of Music and as Peter Pan. She was one of the founders of The Warehouse Theatre, was on its first board, served as its second president, and had roles in several of the theatre’s productions. In an early acting role, Jourdan worked for WFBC TV as “Miss Elizabeth”, the teacher and hostess for the Romper Room TV show for children.

During her lifetime, Jourdan was a member of the Christ Church Altar Guild, the Crescent Music Club, the Junior League of Greenville, The Greenville Debutante Club, The Carillion, The Quadrille, The Metropolitan Club, and the Greenville Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Jourdan loved with a very big heart. She was devoted to her family and her many cherished friends in Greenville. Her exuberant spirit will be deeply missed. She is survived by the families of her three children and three stepchildren and by her sister and brother and their families:

Daughter Priscilla Elizabeth Newton Carroll and husband James Randol Carroll of Crofton, MD, and granddaughter Ellis Carroll and grandson Randol Carroll.

Son William Weston Jones Newton and wife Rose Buyck Newton of Bluffton, SC, and granddaughters Reedy Newton and Elizabeth Rose Newton, and grandson William Newton, Jr.

Daughter-in-law Amy Henderson Newton of Easley, SC, and grandson Weston W. Newton (Kendal) and great-granddaughter Peyton and great-grandson Hunter; granddaughter Margaret Nolte Newton and great-grandsons Wyatt and Blaine.

Stepson Tom Macfie, Jr. and wife Pamela Macfie of Sewanee, TN, and grandson Thomas Macfie.

Stepdaughter Evie Macfie Benton and husband Sam Benton of Charlotte, NC, and grandchildren Leah; Joseph (Ashley) and great-granddaughter Bellamy; Frances (Drew); and John (Taylor).

Stepdaughter Kathleen Macfie of Hillsborough, NC, and granddaughter Wallis Sinatra (Ken).

Sister Priscilla Jones Dukes of Beaufort, SC, her four sons, Marvin Dukes (Laura), William Dukes (Elizabeth), Edward Dukes (Lara), and John Dukes (Katie), and their families.

Brother William Weston Jones, Jr. and wife Margaret Dobson Jones of Bluffton, SC, their four daughters, Dorothy Jones, Mary-Margaret Perez (Manuel), Priscilla Stanzel (Scott), Weston White (Rhoades), and their families.

Jourdan was pre-deceased by her beloved husband Thomas Earle Macfie; son Howard Ellis Newton, III; grandson Morgan Ellis Newton; infant daughter Claire Harris Newton; an infant son; mother Stella Elizabeth Nolte Jones; and father William Weston Jones.

The burial liturgy will be scheduled on a date in the future at Christ Church Episcopal, Greenville, SC.
