

Elizabeth Sommer, 89, died peacefully at her home in Edgewater, MD., Wed., March 16, after an extended illness. Betty was born August 4, 1926 in Fairbury, IL , the daughter of Charles and Elsie Elliott. She was the youngest of four siblings. She married Frederick Sommer on May 6, 1950 at Chanute Air Force Base, Champaign, IL. They were married for 65 years. After graduating from Fairbury High School, Betty attended business school, then went with her sister to work at Chanute Air Force Base where she met her husband, Fred. As the wife of a career Air Force officer and pilot, Betty lived in Roswell, New Mexico and Abilene, Texas. She was a mother, housewife, PTA president and acting Squadron Commander's wife. Upon Fred's retirement from the Air Force, they moved to Annapolis, MD, where Betty worked for Arundel Rug until her retirement in 1988. She especially loved travelling to Air Force reunions all over the United States. During her retirement, she also enjoyed quilting and made several lovely quilts for her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Fred, her children Carol Sommer, Paul Sommer and Sandra (Stephen) Hiller, grandchildren Brian Moriarty, Nora Moriarty, Matthew Hiller, and Victoria Hiller and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as great grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, two sisters and an infant son. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 20, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. and on Monday March 21 from 10-11 a.m. at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD 21401 where services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment, Crownsville Veterans Cemetery, Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville, MD.
